This training quickly proves useful, as she teaches the others how to use their weapons and takes out the most game-makers out of all the characters.

It’s here that Hyun-ju distinguishes herself as one of the most formidable physical forces that the games have ever seen. Through her resilience, she breaks down stereotypes and shines as an inspiring character."

Season 1 Recap

The first season introduces us to the games and primary protagonist–Seong Gi Hun (played by South Korean veteran actor, Lee Jung Jae) a gambling addict in massive debt.

She’s shown to open up slowly as the games progress and she finds allyship with her team members. Within the brutal context of the games, Hyun-Ju has finally managed to forge a family of her own after losing the support and love from her biological one. She is affectionately addressed as “Unnie” (a term used by young women in Korea to address older women) by the group’s youngest member, Kim Young-mi (Kim Si-eun), solidifying her place not only within the group’s dynamic, but also as a woman in the eyes of her peers.

We learn towards the end of season 1 that the “game” is a larger gambling scheme where the players themselves are pawns. With barely a second on the screen, people recognised rising villain star Park Sung Hoon in a wig. Leadership comes to her as easy as her breathing. In setting a vital new precedent that dismantles previous ideals of what representation can look like on-screen, Squid Game has gifted audiences with one of modern television’s most complex and engaging transgender characters.

Park Sung-hoon

.

Park Sung Hoon has been largely cast as gruesome villains in his career, playing them splendidly.

We learn that Gi-Hun’s daughter still expects him to call, we learn more about the relationship between the hot cop, Hwang Jun Ho (played by Wi Han Joon) and the Front Man (played by Lee Byung Hoon) who was revealed to be his “Hyung” or brother in the previous season.

It’s more on the nose about the show’s anti-class remarks, without wanting to get labelled communist.

It’s probably also one of the first times that Hyun Joo is called unnie.

Another lovely addition to her arc is that she’s never shown to sacrifice her masculinity for her femme presentation, she doesn’t run away from who she used to be, she’s still the same person who is just more happier in her skin now!

Other Potential Queer Characters (fan theory)

There’s a certain sexual tension between The Salesman and Seong Gi-Hun, because, hear me out, they only unravel like that around each other.

The Trans Representation in ‘Squid Game’ Is Some of Television’s Best

Over the past few years, there has been an increased amount of discourse surrounding what constitutes “good” representation in television. In a series where characters are frequently pushed to choose between morality and self-preservation, Hyun-ju’s unwavering nature makes her one of its most selfless figures.

It is her inherent selflessness that tragically leads to her demise.

We have always seen the Salesman as a composed guy, but he looks obsessed with Gi-Hun by the time episode 1 ends.

My second contender is Thanos (played by K-pop star T.O.P of Big Bang) who flirts with everyone. Throughout the season, other characters progressively develop an understanding not only of Hyun-ju’s identity, but also who she is as a person.

I know that he primarily flirts with women by calling them señorita, but I’m sure no one missed how he flirted with men along the way too.

Prior to Squid Game, which has now introduced him to a huge international audience, Sung-hoon is best known for his roles in Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum, My Only One, Memorials, Netflix's original K-drama The Glory and Queen of Tears.

In recent years, he’s become known for playing villainous characters which makes watching him as the sweet and lovable Hyun-ju even more exciting for Korean fans who have followed his career.

Park Sung-hoon's personal life is fairly private, but it was reported that he previously dated South Korean actress Ryu Hyun-kyung for six years before they split in 2022.

Why is Park Sung-hoon's casting as Hyun-ju controversial?

Gi-Hun ends up getting an invite from The Salesman for the bigger games where he can earn more money (final prize of ₩45.6 billion/$31 million).

On arriving at the games, Gi-Hun realises that they’ll be playing children’s games but the catch is that the losers lose their lives, as in, they’re killed on losing.

She discusses at length the backlash she faced in her workplace and from her family, and as a result, she has been left with little money to survive. Here’s everything you need to know about Park Sung-hoon.

Who plays Hyun-ju in Squid Game season 2?

Who is Park Sung-hoon?

39-year-old South Korean actor Park Sung-hoon portrays Hyun-ju in Squid Game season 2.

Despite playing a trans woman in the show, Sung-hoon is male and is not trans in real life.

We don’t know if he’s a cis-man, we all know the lengths Korean entertainment industry goes to cover up their stars’ personal relationships, let alone queerness.
