Actor Lucas Grabeel, who played Ryan Evans in the "High School Musical" movies "cried" when he found out the long beloved character would finally come out as gay on "High School Musical: The Musical: The Series," the series' showrunner told TV Line.

"Lucas, like, cried on the phone and said, 'This would mean so much to people who grew up with this movie,'" Tim Federle, the showrunner of "HSMTMTS," told TV Line.

Federle added that he recalled Grabeel saying, "'It's what they were always kind of missing from this character,'" during their phone call.

The fourth and final season of "HSMTMTS," which takes place at the famed East High, unites the current-day Wildcats with high school legends from generations past.

The season starts with a scene showing some of the original "High School Musical" characters filming "High School Musical 4" — a reunion film — at East High.

It's in that clip that viewers see Evans kisses his partner, who is played by Scott Hoying from Pentatonix.

In 2020, "High School Musical" director Kenny Ortega said that Evans would have come out as gay in college, but as the movies stopped with high school graduation, fans did not see that happen.

"It was less about coming out and just more about letting his true colors come forward," Insider reported Ortega said at the time.

"This means so much to me that you're here," Ryan says to the mysterious man backstage, played by none other than Pentatonix's Scott Hoying.

'High School Musical' teaser confirms Lucas Grabeel's Ryan Evans is gay with same-sex kiss

"High School Musical" character Ryan Evans is officially gay – and still fabulous.

Lucas Grabeel reprises his role as Ryan, one half of the Evans twins alongside Ashley Tisdale's Sharpay in the original Disney movie franchise, in the fourth and final season of TV spinoff "High School Musical: The Musical: The Series."

The East High alum shares a same-sex kiss in a sneak peek for the Disney+ show on Tuesday, confirming 15 years of speculation that Ryan is queer.

The clip shows Ryan stepping off stage to thank a man for coming to his show.

"So, I just took it upon myself to make choices that I felt that those who were watching would grab."

The director, who is gay, said he preferred to make Ryan queer-coded out of the worry that Disney would not approve of him being out.

"(Viewers) would see it, they would feel it, they would know it and they would identify with it.

Leads Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens also teased involvement last year, sharing a photo and video, respectively, outside of East High.

And that is what happened," Ortega said.

Ortega is not involved with the Disney+ series.

After Ortega's sentiments about Ryan's sexuality, Grabeel said that as a straight man he was unsure whether not he would play the character if it was offered to him today.

"There's so many amazingly talented gay actors that could do it as well, so if 'High School Musical' was made today, I don't know if I would play Ryan," Grabeel told TMZ in 2020.

He added that he "didn't think at the time" that it would be possible to have an openly gay character in a Disney movie.

The first "High School Musical" movie was released in 2006.

He later reprised his role in one episode of "HSMTMTS" Season 1.

Kenny Ortega, who directed the movie trilogy, previously discussed Ryan's alluded sexuality.

"I was concerned because it was family and kids, that Disney might not be ready to cross that line and move into that territory yet," Ortega told Variety in 2020.
